About Incarnate Word

Drawing on the name of our church, the letters "I" and "W" are incorporated in the logo. The letter "I," drawn as a candle, illuminates the Word, symbolized by a book whose covers and spine form the letter "W." Our logo reminds us that, "Your Word is a lamp to guide me, and a light for my path."

Welcome to Incarnate Word

Our Church is people, architecture, and so much more. People gathered around the Gospel, around Word and Sacrament, defining the Church. These people are, as Martin Luther would say, the "priesthood of all believers." But people are individuals, unique creations of God, too. No two faces or personalities are exactly alike. People of diverse backgrounds and interests.

We are a group of people who assemble from the city and the surrounding metropolitan area.  Grounded in strong worship, music, learning, and caring traditions, we are currently challenging ourselves to reach out to our community in creative ways as we focus on the particular mission to which Christ calls us.

We welcome new people with new ideas and gifts that will enrich our ministry as we together are enriched by the Gospel!  Stop by and check us out!

Our church is an exciting, diverse, and inclusive parish that continues to expand its horizons! Come, join your companions at Incarnate Word and continue your journey of faith, around the Lord's Table, learning, celebrating, singing, caring, growing, and serving.

Our Mission and Vision Statements

Mission

Called, gathered, and transformed by God, we seek to share Christ and serve all people.

Vision

We believe God calls us to use our unique gifts at Incarnate Word to awaken us and others to the Gospel, equip all of us for discipleship, and send us out for ministry. With this call in mind, we will strengthen our ministries by expanding efforts to reach the unchurched, enhancing our care of members, providing specific means for growth in faith and service, and encouraging additional outreach compatible with our mission. We will become a more "mission oriented" congregation.

Our Core Beliefs and Values

     Core Beliefs

What central beliefs and values guide us day by day?  The Incarnate Word Church Council gave this much thought and has approved a living document that expresses what we believe and the values that guide us.

Our Organization and Goals

Incarnate Word is a "mission-driven" organization. Click these buttons for more info:

Stained Glass and Mosaics

Symbolism at Incarnate Word  revolves around the "The Word of God Communicated" theme, and vivid, stained glass windows adorn one side of  our church. The images were custom designed, and various images portray:

Gorgeous Stained-Glass Windows

  • The Word of God

  • The Word Incarnate

  • The Word Proclaimed

  • The Word in Action

  • The Fruit of the Word

Specially-designed mosaics are on the opposite side of the church. Typical of these is the Hand of God reaching down from Heaven and connected with the flow of the sky, the mountains, and the water.

A Brief History

Incarnate Word was formed in 1960 from a merger of two of the area's oldest Lutheran
congregations, Zion (1831) and Concordia (1877).  The current building was completed in 1962 at the corner of Goodman and East Avenue.
