Church Library

News From The Library

Judging by the checkout box, some of you have found our new browsing area by the Sanctuary floor elevator!  This spot  contains most of the library's recent acquisitions.

Visit, browse, and check out An African Prayer Book by Desmond Tutu, Buddha by Karen Armstrong, Living Faith by Jimmy Carter, The Use of the Means of Grace by the ELCA, The Good Book by Peter Gomes, Knitting into the Mystery by Susan Jorgensen, and several other new books.

Note to borrowers:  if you have had a book out for more than a couple of  months, please return it so others may enjoy it too.  Also, remember to always sign the book out.  High school juniors and seniors:  check out our Lutheran college catalog section. We have over 20 catalogs available for you to borrow.

Our Mission Print and other materials have been selected to strengthen our education program, increase knowledge of our Lutheran beliefs and those of other religions, enrich our worship life, provide a Christian perspective about social issues and personal concerns, and deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ.

The Incarnate Word library is available to all members of our church. It's easy to check out items from our library!

Here's how to borrow a book...

Borrowing Procedures
  1. Take the card out of the pocket inside the book or item that you want to borrow. You will usually find the card in the back of the book. If you can't find the card, write the title on a blank card.

  2. Then, write your name and the current date on the card.

  3. Place the card in the wooden tray on the top of the library cabinet.

  4. Remember that someone may want to check out this book, so return it as soon as possible.

  5. When you return the book or item, cross your name off the card and place the item on top of the library cabinet. A member of the Library Team will put the book back on the shelves.

Gift Policy

We welcome your book books to enrich the church library. Donations of print or other materials in good condition will be added to the collection according to the library's selection policy (see below). Once donated, all items become the property of the Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word and may be given to other libraries, sold, traded, or discarded if they are not added to the collection. The library reserves the right to decide when a gift added to the collection may be withdrawn.

Monetary gifts are much appreciated and will be used to purchase materials consistent with the library's book/material acquisition plan.  Books, videos, and other materials purchased with bequests and memorials or horary contributions will be identified with special donor plates whenever possible. If requested, a notification of a memorial gift or honorary contribution will be sent to the family of the person being recognized.

The library cannot appraise or estimate the value of donated items. The church can provide a donation receipt if it is requested.

Selection Policy All materials collected for the Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word library must be appropriate for a church library that serves people of all ages. Materials will be considered for addition if the Library Team determines that materials:
  • meet the criteria listed in the library's mission statement.

  • will enhance the uniqueness of the library collection in that it will include materials that may not be readily available at other locations, such as school, work, home, or other local libraries.

Selections will include but not be limited to publications such as Lutheran Libraries, The Lutheran Magazine, other religious publications such as The Christian Century, and mainstream sources such as the New York Times Book Review. Church members and church groups are invited to suggest books/materials that might be acquired. All requests will be considered by the Library Team.

A wish list is available for anyone who would like to purchase and then donate library books or materials.
